About the Artist
With a background in fashion design and a decade making wedding gowns, artisan Lara Blackman has brought her sewing skills and eye for detail to the world of toys.
Three Owls was started in the winter of 2007 while Lara lived off-grid on a remote BC mountaintop. Workspace in the cabin was small and pretty much dictated what could be made. With an antique Singer treadle sewing machine and a set of SAD irons (the ones pioneer women heated on stoves) Lara started a toy business that would sustain herself and her two young daughters as well as benefit the world we all live in.
The natural fabrics are re-loved from sweaters, skirts, coats, and other found snippets. All of the toys are handcrafted in a pet and smoke free environment. Only clean new wool is used for stuffing and is sourced from local happy sheep. All textiles are thoroughly cleaned with eco friendly products before use.
From original design idea through pattern drafting to hand-finishing all work is done entirely by the artisan.
